We're looking for an Ecologist to work on our Environment & Ecology team.

Location: Birmingham - This role offers hybrid working, combining office and site attendance with home-based working.

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £35,000 - £43,000plus company car/allowance

As an Ecologist at Avove, you will support the delivery of environmental and infrastructure projects through ecological surveys, assessments, and mitigation activities. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll help ensure ecological considerations are integrated into project planning and delivery, contributing to sustainable outcomes and biodiversity enhancement.

This role offers excellent opportunities to develop your technical and field skills, gain experience across a variety of projects, and progress your career towards Senior Ecologist through ongoing professional development and accreditation.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake habitat and protected species surveys, working independently where appropriate and in line with best practice methodologies.
  • Plan and deliver survey activities, including organising resources, timings, and survey requirements.
  • Collect, analyse, and interpret ecological data to inform assessments and project decisions.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports (e.g. survey reports, EcIAs, method statements) to a high standard.
  • Produce and review ecological mapping and data outputs using tools such as GIS.
  • Ensure survey work and deliverables comply with relevant legislation, guidance, and industry standards.
  • Support and contribute to the design and implementation of mitigation and enhancement measures.
  • Provide ecological input into project design, planning, and delivery, identifying constraints and opportunities early.
  • Work collaboratively with design teams, contractors, and clients to integrate ecological requirements into projects.
  • Support site-based activities, including supervision, ecological clerk of works (ECoW) duties, and monitoring compliance.
  • Mentor and support Assistant Ecologists or seasonal staff, sharing knowledge and guidance.
  • Maintain accurate records of survey data, licences, and project information.
  • Contribute to project delivery, managing own tasks to meet deadlines and quality expectations.
  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD), working toward protected species licences and professional accreditation.
About you
  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Good understanding of UK habitats, species, and ecological principles, with the ability to apply this knowledge in practice.
  • Practical experience undertaking habitat and/or protected species surveys in a consultancy, construction, or conservation setting.
  • Working knowledge of relevant environmental and wildlife legislation (e.g. Wildlife & Countryside Act, Habitats Regulations) and its application to projects.
  • Ability to collect, analyse, and interpret ecological data to inform assessments.
  • Experience contributing to or producing ecological reports (e.g. survey reports, method statements, assessments).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions and travel to sites as required.
  • Full UK driving licence.
