Senior/Principal Ecologist with specialism in ornithology

Jacobs invites applications for a senior/principal ecologist with a special interest in ornithology to join our award winning ecology team across the UK. The role involves working with hydrologists, geomorphologists, engineers, planners and project managers to provide ecological input to project teams, advise clients and ensure compliance with environmental legislation.

What you will do
  • Deliver challenging, innovative projects across transport, water and energy for local, regional and national clients including government agencies, local authorities, utilities and energy companies.
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams, building rapport and trust to ensure ornithological requirements are recognised and constraints addressed.
  • Lead ornithological surveys, provide expert advice to clients (internal and external) and support other ecological surveys and project tasks as required.
  • Support Environmental Impact Assessment and Habitats Regulations Appraisals using knowledge of national legislation.
  • Perform desk and site based tasks, travelling across the UK and occasionally working away from home.
What we are looking for
  • Background in terrestrial ecology with industry experience in technical reporting and impact assessment, including national legislation and guidance.
  • Good bird identification skills and an understanding of bird ecology and generic and species specific survey techniques.
  • Experience scoping and executing field surveys and data analysis.
  • Full membership of a professional body (or aspiration toward chartership); chartership holders welcomed.
  • Inquisitiveness, willingness to learn, high personal responsibility and the ability to write clear, concise reports.

Additional preferences:

  • Current and full driving licence.
  • Experience in another ecological specialism beyond ornithology.
Benefits

Competitive salary and 24 holiday days (plus an option to purchase 10 additional days). Robust pension contributions up to 10 %. Comprehensive health coverage with a digital GP service. Professional development support including membership fees and CPD. Family planning support, parental leave, income protection and wellbeing apps. Employee networks, diversity and inclusion programmes and volunteer time.
