Senior Hydrologist / Senior Aquatic Ecologist

Advance TRS is working with a growing environmental consultancy to recruit a Senior Hydrologist / Senior Aquatic Ecologist to join its specialist Water team on a hybrid/remote basis across the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional with a background in hydrology, aquatic ecology or hydro-ecology to take on a varied role combining technical delivery, project management, client engagement and business development.



The Role

The successful candidate will deliver and oversee complex water and hydro-ecological projects, providing technical advice to clients and supporting the continued growth of the specialist water service.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and delivering complex hydrology and hydro-ecological projects.
  • Providing technical advice on relevant legislation, policy and best practice.
  • Managing projects, budgets, programmes and technical deliverables.
  • Reviewing technical reports and ensuring high-quality outputs.
  • Building strong relationships with clients and supporting business development.
  • Contributing to bids, tenders and proposals.
  • Supporting and mentoring colleagues within the wider water team.
  • Undertaking and overseeing aquatic fieldwork, including water quality, macroinvertebrate, fish and river habitat surveys.
  • Contributing to assessments including Water Framework Directive, Habitats Regulations, EIA and nutrient neutrality assessments.
  • Supporting relevant permitting, licensing and flood risk work where required.


About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience within environmental consultancy.
  • A strong background in hydrology, aquatic ecology, freshwater ecology or hydro-ecology.
  • Experience delivering technical assessments and high-quality environmental reports.
  • Good knowledge of aquatic survey techniques, environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience managing projects, budgets and multiple deadlines.
  • Strong client-facing and business development skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
  • A proactive, collaborative and solutions-focused approach.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting less experienced colleagues.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle with business insurance.
